Sri Lanka’s Jungle Railway: A Traveler’s Guide to the Nine Arches Bridge

The Bridge That Touches the Sky
Imagine standing in a lush, green valley, surrounded by the sweet scent of tea leaves and the gentle hum of the jungle. The morning mist slowly lifts, revealing a colossal stone bridge with nine perfect arches, stretching gracefully across the gap. It looks like something out of a fairy tale. Suddenly, you hear a distant horn, and a bright blue train rumbles out of the forest, glides across the bridge, and disappears into a tunnel on the other side. This is the Nine Arches Bridge, and it’s a moment that stays with you forever.
Located in the charming hill town of Ella, this bridge isn’t just an engineering marvel; it’s a piece of living history, a photographer’s dream, and a testament to Sri Lankan ingenuity. It’s a place where nature and human creation meet in the most beautiful way.
The Travel Guide
A Bridge Built From a Story
Before we get to the travel tips, you need to hear the story. It makes seeing the bridge so much more special. Locals call it ‘Ahas Namaye Palama’, or the ‘Bridge of Nine Skies,’ because when you stand underneath and look up, you see the sky framed perfectly through each of the nine arches.
The story goes that during World War I, the British engineers planning the railway line ran out of steel. The project stalled. A local man named P. K. Appuhami, a traditional drummer and builder, approached the engineers. He told them he could build the bridge using only stone, brick, and cement—no steel required. The British were skeptical but eventually agreed. Appuhami and his team built this magnificent structure, and it is said he was so confident in his work that he lay down under the bridge when the first train crossed over. The bridge held strong then, and it holds strong today. It’s a powerful symbol of local skill and pride.

Best Time to Visit
The weather in Ella can be a little unpredictable, which is part of its charm.
- Dry Seasons (December to March & July to August): This is the best time for clear skies and sunny days. The views are spectacular, and it’s perfect for hiking and photography. The bridge looks stunning against a bright blue sky.
- Rainy/Misty Seasons (April to June & October to November): Don’t let the rain stop you! The mist and fog create a mysterious and magical atmosphere. Seeing the bridge appear and disappear through the clouds is an unforgettable experience. Just bring a rain jacket and be careful on slippery paths.
Pro-Tip: The most popular times for the train to cross are in the morning (around 9:30 AM) and mid-afternoon. However, schedules can change! Ask your guesthouse owner or a local tuk-tuk driver for the most up-to-date train times.
What to Do at the Bridge
Seeing the Nine Arches Bridge is an experience, not just a quick photo stop.
- Find Your Viewpoint: There are several great spots. You can walk right onto the bridge itself (just be very careful and get off the tracks long before the train arrives!). You can also follow the path down into the valley to stand beneath the giant arches for an incredible perspective. For a classic view, head to one of the small cafes on the hillside overlooking the bridge.
- Walk the Tracks (Safely!): After a train has passed, take a walk along the tracks and through the dark, cool tunnel at the end of the bridge. It’s a little adventure in itself.
